Lactarius atroviridis Pk. Cap 6-15cm across, convex becoming flatter with a central depression; inrolled margin sometimes ridged; dark olive green with darker olive spots arranged concentrically; scaly or covered with minute fibers, becoming cracked or patchy. Gills adnate to short decurrent, close, narrow becoming broad in age; white to pinky-buff becoming spotted green or brown, often staining greenish at the edges. Stem 20-80 x 10-25mm, becoming hollow; same color as cap or paler, spotted darker green with pitted, polished spots; dry, smooth. Flesh thick at disc, thinner at margin; white to pale pinky-buff. Latex white, unchanging or slowly becoming dull olive, staining the gills olive gray to greenish. Odor slight. Taste acrid. Spores ellipsoid, amyloid, 7-9 x 5.5-6.5µ; ornamented with a broken or partial reticulum and some isolated warts, prominences 0.2-0.5µ high. Deposit pale cream or yellowish. Habitat scattered to gregarious on soil in deciduous and conifer woods. Uncommon. Found in eastern North America. Season August-October. Not edible. |
